As practice shows, drivers in the Republic of Turkey drive carefully, but quickly enough, so local authorities have taken measures to introduce high fines in Turkey for traffic violations. A significant increase in fines occurred in 2018.

The minimum penalty (about 85 Turkish liras) is provided for drivers who carry more passengers than required by the current rules of the road. A fine of more than 100 Turkish liras is provided for the following violations:

  • lack of a maintenance ticket;
  • if the driver is not wearing a seat belt;
  • using a mobile phone while driving;
  • parking at a public transport/taxi stop;
  • The license plate is located in the wrong place or is difficult to read.

List of traffic violations in Turkey and the amount of the fine:

  • Parking in places provided for the disabled — over 200 Turkish liras.
  • Driving without a driver’s license, driving at a red traffic light — over 250 lira.
  • Use of the vehicle in the state:
    — alcohol intoxication (more than 0.02 ppm) — 1,000 lire;
    – narcotic – 5,200 lire.
  • Riding a motorcycle / moped without a helmet — 108 lira.
  • If the vehicle is driven by a citizen who does not have a license — 2,000 lira.
  • The same penalty is provided for driving a car without a license plate.
  • If you exceed the speed limit by more than 30%, you will have to pay a fine of about 500 lira. The same amount is provided for turning off the taximeter in a taxi.

This list lists penalties for traffic violations, the amount of which is at an average level. But, there are also large fines issued for the following gross violations committed on the territory of the Republic of Turkey:

  • installation of a radar detector or other similar device — over 3,000 lira;
  • for the use of fake government numbers — about 6,000 lira;
  • A fine of over 17,000 Turkish liras is provided for forged vehicle documents.

It is worth noting that if you pay the fine within 15 calendar days, then a discount of 25% will be calculated for the total amount. Almost every major regulated intersection has video cameras that timely record violations committed on the roads.

Rent a car in Turkey

If you are a foreign citizen and rent a car in Turkey, it is important not to forget about compliance with existing traffic rules. Otherwise, a fine cannot be avoided.

A violation may be noticed by a traffic police inspector and you may be fined, or non-compliance with traffic rules will be recorded on a city camera. Photos proving the violations committed are sent to the relevant police station.

It is for this reason that if you have rented a car before leaving the resort country, it is recommended to check if you have any fines. If they are not paid, the debtor is not released from the country until the debts are fully repaid.
