Agrarian sector of agriculture in Turkey

One of the main factors determining the country’s economy is agriculture. The development of the agricultural sector in any country in the world makes it possible to provide the population with work, and therefore eliminate the possibility of moving to large cities in order to improve the standard of living and find work.

That is why the heads of many states are trying to ensure the growth and development of agriculture in order to preserve and strengthen their own food security at the country level. Turkey is no exception in this matter.

Qualitative changes in the development of agriculture in Turkey

Over the past decade, Turkey’s agricultural sector has undergone changes. It became noticeable that since the beginning of 2014, there have been threats of the country’s dependence on imports of certain crops:

  • *Grain;
  • *Legumes;
  • *Technical.

As a result, the level of GDP relative to agriculture in Turkey fell to 16%. Analyzing the annual indicators of the development of various sectors of the state, it is this sector that lags far behind heavy industry and other production.

A sharp reduction in farms began. Whole families began to leave villages and villages, leaving for the city. The situation has reached the point where there are simply no young people left in the villages.

Ways to solve the problem

In 2016, it was decided to start the revival of agriculture. Programs to support farms in Turkey began to be developed. The latest strategies for cultivating and improving the quality of land for crops have been proposed and implemented.

In order to improve the quality and competitiveness of agricultural enterprises, changes have been made in the form of advanced training of production managers or their replacement with more professional people.

The state has taken care of supporting self-developing enterprises:

  1. Private investment in land was opened.
  2. Active cooperation between the state and private farmers began to develop.
  3. New technologies have been developed and introduced into production.

The state took decisive steps in time, thanks to which the yield increased sharply. The latest figures have increased by 3 times. For example, relative to world rankings, Turkey has become the leader in the cultivation of cotton and corn.

The only problem was that, not having its own research institutes, Turkey had to pay a significant part of its income abroad for the rights of the breeder.

The Turkish government, seeing the great export potential of the country’s agriculture, began to look for ways to solve this problem. An important aspect was the correct interaction with the EU countries and the competitiveness of the state. So, a country with a favorable climate and soil can and is ready to offer huge areas of legumes and vegetables.

Positive dynamics of development of the agricultural sector in the country

Due to the fact that the Turkish government , by providing assistance to agriculture , as well as supporting private farmers, the state authorities managed not only to equalize, but also to maximize the agricultural economy in the Republic of Turkey.

As a fact, the statement of the President of the Turkish Seed Association that the demand for seed production has increased by 50% over the past few years. Export of seeds amounted to more than 925 thousand tons, which in monetary terms is 150 million. Dollars. Thanks to this, exports in the country exceeded imports by 80%.

The government has already mapped out a development path by 2023. The planned minimum is 1.5 million. tons of export seeds per year. To date, the Republic of Turkey ranks 1st among the 10 leading countries in the production of seeds.

In addition, the state has acquired its own national gene banks and breeding support programs. This great achievement for the country became possible in such a short time.
